Entering middle school can be a stressful time. It’s a new school, puberty is raging, and there are more assignments than ever to keep track of. All told, middle school can cause some serious stress! If your child is starting middle school and you’re not sure how to help them out, here are a few ways you can help them cope with stress.
First, one of the best things you can do is ask them to focus on things that are within their control. For example, it’s not possible to control who likes you or what your teachers are like. It is possible to control how you act as a friend and when you complete your assignments for class. Focusing on these things can help distract your middle schooler from their stressors and maybe even grow despite them. Focusing on what you can control is an excellent strategy to help reduce stress.
Another thing you can do as a parent is teach your child how to take time for themselves. Self-care isn’t always sleeping in or going to the spa, but these activities and others can help your child reset their brain and stop focusing on what’s stressing them out.
